Kenttäemissionäytöissä refers to field emission displays, a type of flat panel display technology. In a field emission display, each pixel is composed of a tiny electron emitter, typically a cone-shaped or edge-shaped protrusion made of a conductive material. When a sufficient electric field is applied across the gap between the emitter and an anode, electrons are "field-emitted" from the surface of the emitter. These emitted electrons then travel towards the anode. In a color display, these electrons strike a phosphor screen, similar to cathode ray tubes (CRTs), causing the phosphors to emit light. Different phosphors are used to produce red, green, and blue light, which are then combined to create the full spectrum of colors visible on the screen.

The primary advantage of field emission displays lies in their potential for high brightness and efficiency, as well as fast response times. They can also offer wide viewing angles. However, challenges related to manufacturing uniformity, power consumption at lower brightness levels, and the longevity of the emitters have historically hindered their widespread commercial adoption compared to other display technologies like LCD and OLED. While research and development have continued, field emission displays have not achieved the same market penetration as their counterparts.
