Keittolevyt, meaning "cooking plates" in Finnish, refers to the heating elements on an electric stove. These are typically circular metal discs that are heated electrically. When electricity passes through a resistance wire embedded within the plate, it generates heat. This heat is then transferred to cookware placed on top of the plate. Keittolevyt have been a common feature in kitchens for decades, offering a straightforward method for cooking.

There are generally two main types of keittolevyt found in modern appliances. The first is the solid electric hob, which is the traditional design. This type consists of a cast iron plate with a heating coil underneath. It takes some time to heat up and cool down. The second type is the radiant electric hob, which uses a coiled heating element beneath a glass-ceramic surface. These heat up faster than solid plates and are easier to clean due to their smooth surface. Both types provide a controlled heat source for various cooking tasks.
