Kaukolämpöasema is a Finnish term referring to a district heating power plant. These facilities are central to modern urban heating systems, providing a centralized and efficient way to deliver thermal energy to buildings. The primary function of a kaukolämpöasema is to generate heat, which is then distributed through a network of underground pipes to homes, businesses, and other institutions.

The heat generated can come from various sources. Traditionally, many kaukolämpöasema used fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, or oil. However, with increasing environmental awareness and regulations, there has been a significant shift towards using renewable energy sources. These can include biomass, such as wood chips and agricultural waste, as well as waste heat recovered from industrial processes or municipal waste incineration. Geothermal energy and heat pumps are also increasingly being integrated into these systems.

The process typically involves burning a fuel source or utilizing recovered heat to boil water. This hot water, or sometimes steam, is then pumped under pressure through the district heating network. As it circulates, it transfers its heat to the buildings connected to the network through heat exchangers. The cooled water then returns to the kaukolämpöasema to be reheated, completing the cycle. This system offers advantages in terms of efficiency, reduced local emissions, and the ability to utilize a wider range of energy sources compared to individual heating systems.
