Kationcserélt refers to a process involving ion exchange, specifically the removal or replacement of positively charged ions, or cations, from a solution. This technique is commonly employed in water treatment to soften water by removing calcium and magnesium ions, which are responsible for hardness. The process typically utilizes a cation exchange resin, a solid material that has a high affinity for cations. As water passes through the resin bed, the undesirable cations in the water are attracted to and bind with the resin, while less problematic cations, such as sodium, are released into the water in exchange.

Over time, the cation exchange resin becomes saturated with the removed ions and loses its effectiveness. At this point, a regeneration process is necessary. This involves flushing the resin with a concentrated solution of a regenerant ion, usually sodium chloride (brine). The high concentration of sodium ions forces the bound calcium and magnesium ions off the resin and back into the solution, which is then drained away. The resin is then rinsed to remove residual brine and is ready for another cycle of cation exchange. This method is widely used in both domestic and industrial settings for water purification and conditioning.
