Kateri Tekakwitha (c. 1656 – 1680) was a Native American woman who is recognized as the first canonized saint of Native American descent. She was born in the Mohawk village of Kanadasega, which is now located in the state of New York. Kateri was known for her deep faith and her efforts to convert her people to Christianity. She was baptized in 1675 and took the name Kateri Tekakwitha, which means "Pure Birch" in her native language. Kateri's life was marked by her dedication to her faith and her community. She is remembered for her courage and her commitment to spreading the Christian message among her people. Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000, making her the first Native American to be recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. Her feast day is celebrated on April 17th.
