Karyological refers to the study of chromosomes, their structure, number, and behavior. This field, a branch of genetics and cell biology, is crucial for understanding heredity, evolution, and the diagnosis of various genetic disorders. Karyologists examine the karyotype, which is the complete set of chromosomes in a cell. The karyotype is typically visualized during cell division, specifically metaphase, when chromosomes are most condensed and easily observable under a microscope. Staining techniques are often employed to differentiate chromosomes and identify specific banding patterns, which can reveal structural abnormalities.

The number of chromosomes is a fundamental characteristic of a species' karyotype. Humans, for instance, have a diploid number of 46 chromosomes, arranged in 23 pairs (22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes). Deviations from this normal number, known as aneuploidy, can lead to conditions like Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), or Turner syndrome (monosomy X). Karyological analysis can also detect chromosomal structural rearrangements such as deletions, duplications, translocations, and inversions. These abnormalities can have significant impacts on an individual's health and development.
