Kardioverzió is a medical procedure used to restore a normal heart rhythm. It is typically performed when a person has an irregular heartbeat, known as an arrhythmia, such as atrial fibrillation or supraventricular tachycardia. The procedure involves delivering a controlled electrical shock or using medications to reset the heart's electrical activity.

There are two main types of cardioversion: electrical and pharmacological. Electrical cardioversion uses a small electrical current delivered through pads placed on the chest. This shock is carefully timed with the heart's electrical cycle to avoid causing a more dangerous arrhythmia. Medications can also be used to convert an abnormal heart rhythm back to normal; this is called pharmacological cardioversion.

Before undergoing cardioversion, patients are usually given medication to prevent blood clots from forming in the heart, as these can be dislodged by the shock. Sedation is also administered to ensure the patient is comfortable during the procedure. After cardioversion, patients are monitored for a period to ensure their heart rhythm has stabilized. The success rate of cardioversion is generally high, but arrhythmias can sometimes return, requiring further treatment.
