karbonylien
Karbonylien, or carbonyl compounds, are a broad class of organic compounds centered on the carbonyl group, a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen (C=O). The carbonyl group is highly polarized, with a partial positive charge on carbon and a partial negative charge on oxygen, making the carbonyl carbon an electrophilic site prone to nucleophilic attack. Carbonyls are found in many functional classes, including aldehydes (R-CHO), ketones (R-CO-R'), carboxylic acids (R-COOH) and a wide array of derivatives such as esters (R-COOR'), amides (R-CONR'R''), anhydrides and acyl chlorides. They can occur in aliphatic or aromatic contexts and in alpha, beta-unsaturated systems.
Classification and naming: Aldehydes are named with the suffix -al, ketones with -one, carboxylic acids with
Reactions: The carbonyl carbon undergoes nucleophilic addition, substitution and condensation reactions. Reduction converts carbonyls to alcohols;
Occurrence and applications: Carbonyl compounds are central to metabolism (sugars, respiration intermediates) and to industry (solvents
