Karbonsfogás is a Hungarian term that translates to "carbon capture" in English. It refers to technologies and processes designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from various sources, primarily industrial facilities and power plants, as well as directly from the atmosphere. The captured CO2 can then be stored underground in geological formations or utilized for other purposes.

The primary motivation behind karbonsfogás is to mitigate climate change by reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. CO2 is a major contributor to global warming, and capturing it at the source prevents it from entering the atmosphere. There are several methods employed for carbon capture, including pre-combustion capture, post-combustion capture, and oxy-fuel combustion. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, cost, and applicability.

Once captured, the CO2 typically undergoes compression and is transported, often via pipelines, to a suitable storage site. Geological storage options include depleted oil and gas reservoirs, saline aquifers, and unmineable coal seams. The long-term stability and security of these storage sites are crucial considerations. Karbonsfogás is considered a key technology in the transition to a low-carbon economy, particularly for sectors that are difficult to decarbonize through other means. However, the widespread deployment of these technologies faces challenges related to economic viability, energy requirements, and public perception.
