Karbonaadarühmid, often translated as carbonaceous chondrites, are a class of meteorites that represent some of the earliest and most primitive materials in the solar system. They are characterized by their high carbon content, which can include organic compounds, as well as the presence of chondrules. Chondrules are small, rounded grains that are believed to have formed from molten droplets in the early solar nebula. The composition of carbonaceous chondrites is thought to closely resemble that of the Sun, minus the volatile elements like hydrogen and helium that have escaped into space.

These meteorites are further classified into several groups, such as CI, CM, CO, CV, and CR, based on their mineralogy, chemical composition, and petrology. The CI group, for instance, is the most primitive and has an elemental composition very similar to the Sun. Other groups, like the CV and CO chondrites, contain more abundant chondrules. The presence of water and hydrated minerals in many carbonaceous chondrites suggests that they formed in cooler, wetter regions of the solar nebula or experienced aqueous alteration after their formation. Their study provides invaluable insights into the conditions and processes that occurred during the formation of the solar system, the origin of organic molecules, and the potential for life beyond Earth.
