Karbiidlõiketerad, also known as carbide inserts, are small, detachable cutting tools typically made from cemented carbide, a composite material of tungsten carbide and a binder metal like cobalt. The primary advantage of carbide inserts is their hardness and wear resistance, which allows them to cut at much higher speeds and maintain their sharpness for longer periods compared to traditional high-speed steel cutting tools. This leads to increased productivity and reduced downtime.

Carbide inserts come in a vast array of shapes, sizes, and edge geometries to suit specific applications and materials. Common shapes include squares, triangles, diamonds, and rounds. The edges can be sharp for fine finishing or have a rounded radius for heavier cutting. Coatings, such as titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbonitride (TiCN), or aluminum oxide (Al2O3), are often applied to the surface of carbide inserts to further enhance their hardness, reduce friction, and improve thermal resistance, thereby extending their lifespan.

The selection of the correct carbide insert is crucial for efficient and effective machining. Factors such as the workpiece material (e.g., steel, aluminum, cast iron), the type of operation (e.g., roughing, finishing), cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut all influence the choice of insert. Carbide inserts are designed to be indexed, meaning when one edge becomes worn, the insert can be rotated to present a fresh cutting edge, maximizing its utility before it needs to be replaced. This disposability and replaceability are key features that contribute to their widespread use in modern manufacturing.
