Kapillærbevegelser refers to the movement of a liquid through a narrow space, such as a porous material or a narrow tube, without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. This phenomenon is driven by a combination of adhesive and cohesive forces. Adhesion is the attraction between the liquid molecules and the molecules of the surface of the tube or material. Cohesion is the attraction between the liquid molecules themselves.

When a liquid, such as water, is in contact with a narrow tube made of a material it wets (like glass), the adhesive forces between the water and glass are stronger than the cohesive forces within the water. This causes the water molecules to be pulled upwards along the sides of the tube, forming a concave meniscus. The surface tension of the water then pulls the rest of the liquid upwards to follow, resulting in the liquid rising in the tube.

The height to which the liquid rises is inversely proportional to the diameter of the tube. In narrower tubes, the liquid will rise higher because the surface area of the contact between the liquid and the tube is larger relative to the volume of the liquid, allowing adhesive forces to have a greater effect.

In biology, it explains how water is drawn up from the soil into the roots and stems of plants, a process vital for their survival. It also plays a role in the movement of water and nutrients within the human body, such as in the bloodstream and through tissues.
