Kapillaritásban refers to the phenomenon of capillary action, which is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. This occurs in porous materials, such as soil, paper, or within narrow tubes. The primary forces driving capillary action are adhesive forces between the liquid and the walls of the container or material, and cohesive forces within the liquid itself.

When a liquid comes into contact with a surface that attracts it more strongly than the liquid's own molecules are attracted to each other, the liquid will "wet" the surface. In narrow spaces, this adhesion causes the liquid to rise or be drawn up the walls, effectively creating a meniscus. The surface tension of the liquid, a result of cohesive forces, then pulls the rest of the liquid along. The narrower the space, the more pronounced the capillary effect. This is why water will rise higher in a very thin straw than in a wider one.

In biology, it's essential for water transport in plants, allowing water to move from the roots to the leaves against gravity.
