A kapacitansprobe, or capacitance probe, is a type of sensor used to measure electrical capacitance. Capacitance is the ability of a system to store an electric charge. A capacitance probe typically consists of two conductive electrodes separated by a dielectric material. When a voltage is applied across the electrodes, an electric field is generated, and charge accumulates on the surfaces of the electrodes. The amount of charge stored is directly proportional to the capacitance of the probe.

Capacitance probes operate on the principle of varying capacitance. The dielectric material between the electrodes can be a vacuum, air, or any other insulating substance. If the distance between the electrodes changes, or if the dielectric constant of the material between them changes, the capacitance will also change. These sensors find applications in various fields. In industry, they are used for level sensing in tanks containing liquids or solids, as proximity sensors to detect the presence of objects, and in touch screen technology. The material being sensed acts as part of the dielectric, causing a change in the capacitance of the probe.

The measurement of capacitance is usually done by incorporating the probe into an oscillator circuit. The oscillator's frequency is dependent on the capacitance of the probe. As the capacitance changes due to external factors, the oscillator's frequency shifts, and this shift is then measured and converted into a meaningful output, such as a voltage or a digital signal. Capacitance probes are known for their non-contact operation, which makes them suitable for measuring the level of abrasive or corrosive materials.
