kannt

Kannt is a fictional constructed language (conlang) developed for worldbuilding and speculative fiction. Created by linguist and writer Elena Miro in the early 2010s, Kannt is described as the native tongue of a coastal, trade-oriented culture in the archipelago of Nerra. The language is designed to emphasize clear discourse, social politeness, and a compact verbal system that supports rapid negotiation.

Phonology and writing systems: Kannt employs a five-vowel system (a, e, i, o, u) and roughly twenty consonants, including p, t, k, m, n, s, l, r, w, and y. Syllables are typically CV or CVC, with stress on the penultimate syllable. The primary writing system is a Latin-based alphabet with diacritics; a ceremonial syllabary, Kannari, is used for special inscriptions and poetry.

Grammar and morphology: The language follows a subject–verb–object (SVO) order. Nouns can form plurals with the suffix -n and indicate possession with -ka. Verbs mark tense using prefixes for past, present, and future, and aspect through suffixes. An evidential mood marks the source of information (direct, inferred, or reported). A small set of particles handles negation, question formation, and modality. Pronoun systems include inclusive and exclusive forms in the first-person plural.

Usage and cultural context: In the fictional setting, Kannt functions as a lingua franca among island communities for trade, diplomacy, and storytelling. It is taught in schools and used in maritime heraldry and song. Kannt’s design aims to balance expressiveness with learnability, supporting both practical dialogue and literary poetry.
