Kalpeutta, also known as Kalpana Chawla, was an Indian-American astronaut and engineer who became one of the most prominent figures in the history of space exploration. Born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, Haryana, India, Chawla was the first Indian woman to travel to space and the first Indian woman of color to achieve this feat. She earned her bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, India, and later obtained a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington.
Chawla began her career at NASA in 1988 as a research engineer at the Ames Research Center
Chawla's second and final spaceflight was aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia during the STS-107 mission in 2003.
