Kalorimetrimenetelmät, or calorimetry methods, are techniques used to measure heat changes associated with physical or chemical processes. The fundamental principle involves isolating a system and measuring the heat absorbed or released by a known amount of substance, often water, under controlled conditions. This measured heat change is then used to calculate the enthalpy change of the process.

There are several common types of calorimeters. Bomb calorimeters are used for measuring the heat of combustion of fuels and food. They consist of a sealed vessel where the reaction occurs in a high-pressure oxygen atmosphere, and the heat released is absorbed by surrounding water. Solution calorimeters are typically used for reactions occurring in solution, such as acid-base neutralization or dissolution processes. These often involve a well-insulated container with a stirrer and thermometer. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is a more sophisticated technique that measures the difference in heat flow between a sample and a reference as they are heated or cooled. This allows for the determination of transition temperatures, heats of transition, and reaction kinetics. Adiabatic calorimeters aim to minimize heat exchange with the surroundings, ensuring that all heat produced or consumed by the process stays within the calorimeter. The accuracy of calorimetric measurements depends heavily on the design of the calorimeter, proper calibration, and careful execution of the experiment.
