Kaasupurkauslamput, also known as gas-discharge lamps, are a type of electric light where light is produced by an electric arc passing through an ionized gas, or plasma. This process is called gas discharge. The gas is typically contained within a sealed glass or quartz tube.

When an electric current is passed through the gas, the atoms within the gas become excited. As these excited atoms return to their normal state, they release energy in the form of photons, which we perceive as light. The color and intensity of the light depend on the type of gas used and the pressure within the tube.

There are several types of kaasupurkauslamput, including fluorescent lamps, mercury-vapor lamps, sodium-vapor lamps, and metal-halide lamps. Fluorescent lamps, for example, use a low-pressure mercury vapor discharge to produce ultraviolet light, which then excites a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, causing it to emit visible light. High-intensity discharge (HID) lamps like mercury-vapor, sodium-vapor, and metal-halide lamps operate at higher pressures and produce much brighter light, making them suitable for street lighting, stadiums, and other large-scale illumination needs.

Kaasupurkauslamput are known for their energy efficiency and long lifespan compared to incandescent lamps. However, they often require a ballast to regulate the current and voltage supplied to the lamp. Some types, like sodium-vapor lamps, can also have a characteristic color that may not be desirable for all applications.
