A kötvénytulajdonos, or bondholder in English, is an individual or entity that owns a bond. Bonds are essentially debt instruments where the issuer (borrower) owes the bondholder (lender) a debt and is obliged to pay periodic interest payments (coupons) and to repay the principal amount at a specified maturity date.

When an investor buys a bond, they are lending money to the issuer, which can be a corporation, municipality, or government. In return for this loan, the bondholder receives the promised interest payments and the eventual return of their initial investment. The terms of these payments, including the interest rate, frequency of payments, and maturity date, are all outlined in the bond's indenture.

Bondholders have a creditor relationship with the issuer, meaning they have a claim on the issuer's assets that typically takes precedence over that of stockholders in the event of bankruptcy or liquidation. This makes bonds generally considered a less risky investment compared to stocks, although the level of risk varies significantly depending on the issuer's creditworthiness.

The rights and responsibilities of a kötvénytulajdonos are defined by the bond agreement. They do not typically have voting rights in the issuer's affairs, unlike shareholders. However, they do have the right to receive their contractual payments as scheduled. If the issuer defaults on these payments, bondholders may have legal recourse to recover their investment.
