Jäätyypeistä is a term that refers to the various crystalline structures that water can form when it freezes. While common ice, known as ice Ih, is the most familiar form, water can actually exist in at least 19 different solid phases under varying temperature and pressure conditions. These phases are distinguished by their unique molecular arrangements and physical properties.

The most prevalent form of ice encountered on Earth is ice Ih, characterized by its hexagonal crystal structure. This is the ice that forms in refrigerators, lakes, and oceans. However, under high pressures, water can be compressed into more densely packed arrangements, leading to other ice phases. For example, ice II and ice III are denser than ice Ih and can form under specific pressure regimes.

Further increases in pressure can yield even more exotic forms like ice V, VI, VII, and VIII, each with distinct crystal lattice structures. These high-pressure ice phases are not typically found in everyday environments but are significant in planetary science, particularly concerning the interiors of icy moons and planets.
