Jääkaasu, also known as solid carbon dioxide, is the solid form of carbon dioxide. At atmospheric pressure, it sublimates directly from a solid to a gas at a temperature of -78.5 degrees Celsius (-109.3 degrees Fahrenheit). This sublimation property makes it a unique cooling agent. Unlike water ice, which melts into a liquid, jääkaasu bypasses the liquid phase entirely.

The production of jääkaasu involves compressing gaseous carbon dioxide and then cooling it to a point where it solidifies. It is often manufactured in the form of dry ice pellets or blocks. Its extremely low temperature and the absence of liquid residue make it ideal for applications where moisture would be detrimental.

Jääkaasu is commonly used for transporting perishable goods, such as food and medical supplies, where maintaining a consistently low temperature is crucial. It is also employed in theatrical special effects to create fog or mist, as the sublimating gas condenses atmospheric moisture. In scientific research, it serves as a coolant for experiments requiring very low temperatures. When handling jääkaasu, it is important to use protective gloves due to its extreme cold, which can cause frostbite. Proper ventilation is also necessary because the accumulating carbon dioxide gas can displace oxygen in enclosed spaces.
