A jäähdytyskone, or refrigeration machine in English, is a device that removes heat from a space or substance to create a lower temperature. This process is fundamental to various applications, including food preservation, air conditioning, and industrial processes.

The core principle behind most jäähdytyskone devices is the refrigeration cycle. This cycle typically involves a refrigerant, a working fluid that changes state between liquid and gas. The cycle begins with the compressor, which increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas. This high-pressure, high-temperature gas then flows to the condenser, where it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses into a high-pressure liquid. The liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature drop significantly. Finally, the low-pressure, low-temperature liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the space or substance to be cooled, causing it to evaporate into a gas. This gas then returns to the compressor, and the cycle repeats.

Different types of jäähdytyskone exist, including vapor-compression refrigeration, absorption refrigeration, and thermoelectric cooling. Vapor-compression systems are the most common for domestic and commercial use. Absorption systems use a heat source, such as natural gas or solar energy, to drive the refrigeration cycle, making them useful in locations where electricity is scarce. Thermoelectric coolers utilize the Peltier effect, where an electric current creates a temperature difference between two dissimilar materials.
