Jäähdytin is the Finnish word for radiator. In the context of vehicles, it refers to the essential component responsible for cooling the engine. The radiator is part of the cooling system, which circulates coolant (a mixture of antifreeze and water) through the engine to absorb excess heat.

The engine's heat is transferred to the coolant, which then flows to the radiator. The radiator consists of a series of thin tubes and fins. As the hot coolant flows through these tubes, air passes over the fins, dissipating the heat from the coolant into the surrounding atmosphere. A fan, either engine-driven or electric, is often used to increase airflow through the radiator, especially when the vehicle is stationary or moving at low speeds.

Once the coolant has been cooled, it circulates back to the engine to repeat the cooling process. This continuous cycle prevents the engine from overheating, which could cause significant damage. Radiators are typically made of aluminum or copper due to their excellent heat conductivity. Proper maintenance of the cooling system, including checking coolant levels and flushing the system periodically, is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the radiator and the engine.
