Wastewater originates from various sources including homes, businesses, and industries. The primary goal of a jätevesilaitos is to protect public health and the environment by treating this wastewater to meet specific quality standards.

The treatment process typically involves several stages. Preliminary treatment removes large debris like grit and rags through screening and grit removal. Primary treatment then allows solid materials to settle out of the water in large tanks. Secondary treatment uses biological processes, where microorganisms consume organic matter in the wastewater. This can involve activated sludge processes or trickling filters. Tertiary treatment, if employed, further refines the water by removing nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen, or by disinfection to kill remaining pathogens.

Treated wastewater, or effluent, is then discharged into rivers, lakes, or oceans, or sometimes reused for irrigation or industrial purposes. Sludge, the solid material removed during treatment, is also managed. It can be dewatered, digested to reduce its volume and potential for odor, and then disposed of in landfills, incinerated, or used as fertilizer.
