Jätevedenpuhdistuslaitokset, often referred to as wastewater treatment plants, are facilities designed to remove pollutants from wastewater before it is discharged back into the environment. This process is crucial for protecting public health and the aquatic ecosystems. The primary goals of wastewater treatment are to remove solid materials, reduce organic matter, and eliminate harmful pathogens and chemicals.

Wastewater treatment typically involves several stages. The initial stage, preliminary treatment, focuses on removing large debris like rags, grit, and sand through screening and grit chambers. Following this, primary treatment involves settling heavier solids out of the water in large tanks called primary clarifiers, forming sludge. Secondary treatment, the most common stage, employs biological processes where microorganisms consume dissolved organic matter. This is often achieved in aeration tanks or trickling filters. After biological treatment, a secondary clarifier further settles out remaining suspended solids and biomass.

The final stages, tertiary treatment and disinfection, further refine the water. Tertiary treatment can remove nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which can cause eutrophication in receiving waters. Disinfection is essential to kill any remaining harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, commonly achieved through chlorination, UV irradiation, or ozonation. The treated effluent, now significantly cleaner, is then safely released into rivers, lakes, or oceans. The sludge generated throughout the process is also treated, often through digestion, and can be used for beneficial purposes like fertilizer or energy production.
