Jätelajittelu, or waste sorting, is the process of separating different types of waste materials for the purpose of recycling, composting, or safe disposal. Glass is melted down and reformed into new glass containers. Metals are smelted and reused in various manufacturing processes. Plastics are sorted by type and can be recycled into new plastic items or used for energy recovery. Organic waste is often composted, producing nutrient-rich soil amendment. General waste, or residual waste, contains items that cannot be recycled or composted and is usually sent to landfills or incinerated for energy.
