If a root certificate were compromised, it could be used to issue fraudulent certificates for malicious websites, leading to widespread impersonation and data theft. Therefore, root CAs are subject to stringent security measures and regular audits to maintain their trustworthiness. The process of adding or removing a root certificate from a system's trust store is typically a carefully controlled and deliberate action.
