Juuripalvelimelta, also known as root server, is a critical component of the Domain Name System (DNS). It is the highest level of the DNS hierarchy and serves as the starting point for DNS queries. There are 13 logical root servers, each identified by a letter from A to M. When a user types a domain name into a web browser, the query first goes to a root server, which then responds with the addresses of the TLD servers responsible for that domain. For example, if the domain is "example.com", the root server would direct the query to the ".com" TLD server.

They play a crucial role in the functioning of the internet by facilitating the translation of human-readable domain names into IP addresses, which are necessary for data transmission.

The management and operation of root servers are overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN ensures that the root server system remains secure, stable, and efficient, adhering to strict operational standards and protocols.
