Juoksevaan is a Finnish grammatical form that functions as the illative singular of the present active participle juokseva, meaning running. The participle juokseva is derived from the verb juosta, “to run,” and describes something in a running state.

In Finnish, adjectives and participles decline to agree with the noun they modify. When the noun is in the illative singular, the adjective or participle preceding it also takes the illative singular ending, giving forms such as juoksevaan. This combination signals direction toward the noun described as running, as in juoksevaan moottoriin, or “into a running engine.”
