jattende

Jattende is a small hamlet located in the municipality of Tongeren, within the province of Limburg, Belgium. The settlement lies approximately two kilometres northwest of the city centre of Tongeren and is part of the region known as Neerstrem. Geographically, Jattende sits in a predominantly flat landscape characterised by agricultural fields, interspersed with patches of woodland that historically supported local farming activities.

The name “Jattende” appears in historical records dating back to the 12th century, when it was referenced in land deeds related to the Abbey of Sint-Truiden. Over the centuries, the hamlet remained a modest agrarian community, with its residents primarily engaged in crop cultivation and livestock rearing. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the development of the railway line from Tongeren to Maastricht introduced a station at Jattende, facilitating the transport of goods and people and slightly increasing the hamlet’s connectivity to larger urban centres.

Today, Jattende retains its rural character, with a small residential population and a few local farms. The hamlet is served by the Jattende railway station, which provides regular Regional Express (RE) services to Tongeren, Maastricht, and Liège, making it an attractive location for commuters who prefer a quieter living environment. Recreational activities in the area include walking and cycling along the nearby Saffelbeek stream and visiting the historic St. John the Baptist chapel, which dates from the early 18th century.
