Jarðskjálfti is the Icelandic word for earthquake. An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface. These plates are massive pieces of the Earth's crust that are constantly moving, albeit very slowly. When these plates collide, slide past each other, or pull apart, stress builds up. When this stress exceeds the strength of the rocks, they rupture, releasing energy in the form of seismic waves that travel through the Earth and cause the ground to shake.
