Izocyjanianow, scientifically known as isocyanates, are a class of organic compounds characterized by the functional group -N=C=O. This group is highly reactive due to the cumulative double bonds. Isocyanates are widely used in the chemical industry, most notably in the production of polyurethanes, which are versatile polymers found in foams, elastomers, coatings, and adhesives.

The simplest isocyanate is isocyanic acid (HNCO). Other common examples include toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). These compounds are typically synthesized through the phosgenation of amines.

The high reactivity of the isocyanate group makes them valuable building blocks for polymerization. They readily react with compounds containing active hydrogen atoms, such as alcohols, amines, and water, to form urethane, urea, and carbamic acid derivatives, respectively. This reactivity, however, also presents safety concerns. Isocyanates can be respiratory sensitizers, and exposure can lead to occupational asthma. Proper handling and ventilation are crucial when working with these chemicals.
