Izdatelstvo is the activity and industry of publishing printed and digital works. In Russian and other Slavic languages the term can refer to the publishing house as a company as well as the broader publishing sector.

A publishing house handles acquisitions, editing, design, production, distribution, and rights management; it may publish fiction, non-fiction, academic works, textbooks, and magazines; it may also publish online and e-books.

It's organized into departments such as editorial, production, design, marketing, and sales. Ownership varies: state or municipal publishers in some countries, private and corporate-owned in others; university presses and non-profit publishers are common in academia.

Historical note: in the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, publishing was heavily controlled; state publishing houses and committees regulated what could be printed. After the late 20th century, market reforms led to privatization and a broader array of independent publishers. The sector has since adapted to digital formats and online distribution.

In modern usage, izdatelstvo also denotes the publishing industry in general and the practice of publishing, including rights management, print-on-demand, and digital licensing; it exists across Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other post-Soviet states and in other Slavic-language communities.
