Isäntäläissuhteet, a Finnish term, refers to a historical system of agricultural and social organization prevalent in Finland. It was characterized by the relationship between a landowner, known as the isäntä, and various individuals who worked the land or provided services in exchange for sustenance and shelter. This system encompassed a spectrum of arrangements, from tenant farmers and crofters to farmhands and domestic servants.

The isäntä, typically the owner of a larger farm, held considerable authority. They were responsible for managing the land, livestock, and the overall operation of the farm. In return for their labor, the individuals under their employ, often referred to as isäntäläiset, received a place to live, food, and sometimes a small plot of land or a share of the produce. This reciprocal arrangement formed the backbone of rural life and economy for centuries.

The specific terms and conditions of isäntäläissuhteet varied significantly depending on the region, the size of the farm, and the economic climate. Socially, the relationship was hierarchical, with the isäntä at the top of the farm's internal structure. However, it also fostered a sense of community and interdependence, as the survival and prosperity of everyone on the farm were linked.
