Isostatiskt is a Swedish term that translates to isostatic in English. It refers to the state of gravitational equilibrium between the Earth's crust and mantle such that the crust floats at an elevation dependent on its thickness and density. This concept is fundamental to understanding large-scale geological processes, particularly those involving the uplift and subsidence of landmasses.

The principle of isostasy was first proposed by George Airy in the mid-19th century. He suggested that mountains have deep "roots" extending into the denser mantle, analogous to icebergs floating in water where a larger portion of their mass is submerged. Later, John Henry Pratt proposed a different model where the depth of the roots was proportional to the elevation of the surface. Both models aim to explain why different geological features exist at varying altitudes.

Isostatic adjustment occurs when there are changes in the load on the Earth's crust. For example, the melting of glaciers after an ice age removes immense weight, causing the landmass beneath to slowly rebound upwards. Conversely, the accumulation of heavy sediments or volcanic material can cause the crust to sink. This process of adjustment is a slow one, often taking thousands of years to complete. The study of isostasy is crucial for geologists and geophysicists in interpreting the Earth's structure and history.
