Isobaric refers to a process, experiment, or condition where the pressure remains constant. In thermodynamics, an isobaric process is one that occurs at a fixed pressure. This means that as a system undergoes a change, its pressure does not change.

For example, when a gas is heated in a container with a movable piston that is free to move without friction, the pressure inside the container can remain constant as the volume of the gas changes. In such a scenario, any heat added to the system will do work by expanding the volume, and the internal energy will also change. The relationship between heat added (Q), work done (W), and change in internal energy (ΔU) in an isobaric process is given by the first law of thermodynamics: Q = ΔU + W.

In chemistry, an isobaric reaction is one that takes place under constant pressure conditions. Many chemical reactions in open beakers or flasks occur at atmospheric pressure, which is often considered constant for practical purposes.

The term isobaric can also be used in other contexts, such as in physics related to mass spectrometry where isotopes with the same mass number but different atomic numbers are called isobars. However, the most common usage relates to processes occurring at constant pressure. Understanding isobaric processes is fundamental in analyzing thermodynamic cycles and chemical reactions.
