Ngazidja, also known as Grande Comore, is the largest island of the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It lies off the eastern coast of Africa, near Madagascar and Mozambique, and forms the central core of the Union of the Comoros. The island is of volcanic origin and features a rugged interior with Mount Karthala, one of Africa's largest active volcanoes, which has erupted repeatedly in recent decades. The coastal zone is more densely populated and hosts Moroni, the national capital, located on the eastern coast.
