Irrotettuna is a Basque term that literally means “unrotated” or “not rotated.” In everyday Basque usage it describes something that has not undergone rotation, but in scientific and mathematical contexts the word is used to translate the concept of “irrotational.”

In mathematics and physics, an irrotational (irrotettuna) field is one whose curl is zero. For a vector field F(x, y, z), this is written as curl F = 0. A key consequence is that on a simply connected domain, such a field can be expressed as the gradient of a scalar potential: F = −∇φ. This implies that line integrals of the field between two points depend only on the endpoints, not on the path taken.

In physical applications, irrotettuna fields appear in potential flow theory in fluid dynamics, where the velocity field of an ideal, incompressible, irrotational fluid is described by a potential function. They also arise in electrostatics and magnetostatics, where certain fields are curl-free in regions without changing magnetic effects.
