Ioninvaihtoresiini, or ion exchange resin, is a porous, insoluble polymer that contains mobile ions. These ions can be exchanged for other ions present in a surrounding solution. The resin typically consists of a solid matrix, often made from polystyrene or acrylic copolymers, to which charged functional groups are attached. The type of functional group determines whether the resin is cationic (negatively charged matrix, exchanges positive ions) or anionic (positively charged matrix, exchanges negative ions).

The process of ion exchange occurs when a solution containing ions is passed through a bed of ion exchange resin. The mobile ions on the resin are attracted to ions in the solution with opposite charges. For example, a cation exchange resin can remove calcium ions from hard water by exchanging them for sodium ions. Similarly, an anion exchange resin can remove nitrate ions by exchanging them for chloride ions.

Ion exchange resins have numerous applications. They are widely used in water treatment for softening, demineralization, and the removal of specific contaminants. In the chemical industry, they serve as catalysts, purifiers, and in the separation of valuable substances. The pharmaceutical industry employs them for drug delivery and purification. Furthermore, ion exchange resins are utilized in food processing for sugar demineralization and in analytical chemistry for sample preparation and separation techniques. The regeneration of the resin, typically by flushing with a concentrated solution of the original ions, allows for its reuse.
