Ionenzustände refers to the electrical charge carried by an atom or molecule when it has gained or lost one or more electrons. When an atom loses electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion, known as a cation. Conversely, when an atom gains electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion, or an anion. The number of electrons lost or gained determines the magnitude of the ionic charge. For example, sodium (Na) readily loses one electron to form a sodium ion with a +1 charge (Na+). Chlorine (Cl) readily gains one electron to form a chloride ion with a -1 charge (Cl-).
