Intrascapular refers to something located within the scapula, also known as the shoulder blade. The scapula is a large, triangular flat bone that lies over the posterior aspect of the thorax. It connects the humerus (upper arm bone) with the clavicle (collarbone). Within the scapula itself are various anatomical structures and spaces.

For example, the supraspinous fossa and infraspinous fossa are two distinct depressions on the posterior surface of the scapula. These fossae serve as origins for the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles, respectively, which are part of the rotator cuff. Therefore, processes or conditions occurring within these fossae would be considered intrascapular.

The glenoid cavity, which articulates with the head of the humerus to form the shoulder joint, is also a part of the scapula. Injuries or pathologies affecting the glenoid labrum, a ring of fibrocartilage that deepens the socket, are also intrascapular in nature. Understanding intrascapular anatomy is crucial for diagnosing and treating a range of shoulder conditions, including fractures, tears of the rotator cuff muscles, and other injuries to the shoulder blade.
