insuliiniöljyn
Insuliiniöljy refers to a preparation containing insulin suspended in an oil base. This formulation was developed as a long-acting form of insulin. The oil acts as a depot, slowing down the absorption of insulin into the bloodstream after injection. This extended release profile allows for less frequent dosing compared to rapidly acting insulins. Historically, insuliiniöljy preparations were used to provide basal insulin coverage throughout the day and night. However, their use has largely been superseded by the development of more advanced insulin analogs, such as insulin glargine and insulin detemir, which offer more predictable and consistent pharmacokinetic profiles without the need for an oil vehicle. These newer analogs are generally preferred due to their improved efficacy, safety, and convenience. The use of insuliiniöljy is now uncommon in modern diabetes management.
