Instrumentals are musical works that emphasize instruments and musical performance while containing little or no vocal content. Instrumental music can stand alone as a complete piece, or be used as a background element in film, television, advertising, and other media. In popular music, an instrumental version of a vocal track may be released where the vocals are removed or minimized to foreground the music.

Instrumentals span many genres and traditions. In classical music, orchestral, chamber, and solo works rely on melody, harmony, and counterpoint played by instruments. Jazz emphasizes improvisation among instrumentalists. Electronic and ambient genres explore texture and atmosphere through synthesized and processed sounds. Film, television, and video game scores are typically instrumental to support mood and narrative, while instrumental hip hop and lo-fi beats have developed as distinct subgenres.

Composition and production focus on timbre, rhythm, and structure. Instrumental works may feature a single lead instrument or an ensemble, and can range from concise pieces to extended suites. Modern production often uses digital audio workstations, virtual instruments, and sampling to create and refine instrumentals, enabling artists to craft intricate textures and dynamic contrasts without vocals.

Beyond performance venues, instrumentals are used for background listening, study and concentration, film and media scoring, and as standalone artistic statements. The term instrumental is also used to categorize music releases that lack vocal tracks, and to describe music designed primarily for instrumental performance.
