inntök

Inntök is an Icelandic term referring to the process by which a person is admitted to a program or institution, most commonly to higher education. It denotes the status or act of being accepted into a course of study and is distinct from innritun (enrollment), which occurs after admission.

Admission procedures vary by program and institution but typically involve submitting an application with supporting documents such as academic transcripts, diplomas, proof of identity, and, where required, evidence of language proficiency. Many programs specify inntökuskilyrði (admission requirements) that applicants must meet, which can include minimum grades, prerequisite courses, or professional qualifications. Some programs use entrance exams (inntökpróf), interviews, or auditions, while others rely on merit-based selection, a lottery, or a combination of criteria.

The outcome of an application is usually communicated as an admission decision, sometimes accompanied by a waitlist or reasons for rejection. In many cases, applicants may appeal decisions or seek guidance on meeting requirements for subsequent application cycles. After admission, the next step is innritun (enrollment) to begin the studies.
