In-medium, often written as in-medium, is an adjective describing phenomena that occur within a material medium through which waves, particles, or signals propagate.

In physics, in-medium effects refer to changes in the properties of particles and interactions caused by the surrounding medium. Examples include in-medium mass shifts and altered lifetimes of particles in nuclear or hadronic matter, and modified transport properties in condensed matter systems.

In optics and acoustics, the passage of light, sound, or other waves depends on the medium’s electromagnetic or mechanical properties. In-medium effects include refraction, absorption, scattering, and dispersion arising from the medium’s refractive index, attenuation length, and impedance.

The term is usually hyphenated (in-medium) in standard English; “inmedium” as a single word is uncommon outside specialized branding or proper nouns.
