Inktreservoirs are containers designed to hold liquid ink for subsequent delivery to a printing or writing mechanism. They are a common feature in devices such as fountain pens and inkjet printers, where a steady ink supply is essential for consistent writing and printing quality. The reservoir’s size, resilience, and interaction with the feed system influence reliability, line quality, and refill frequency.

In fountain pens, the reservoir stores ink between fills and transfers ink to the nib through a capillary feed. Reservoir designs vary, including replaceable ink cartridges, converters that draw ink from bottles, and built-in filling systems such as piston-fill mechanisms or flexible sacs. Some pens employ the entire barrel as an eyedropper reservoir. Materials range from natural or synthetic rubber sacs to plastic cartridges and metal or plastic converters, chosen for flexibility, chemical resistance, and longevity. The interaction between the reservoir and the nib/feed system determines ink flow and pressure dynamics during writing.

In inkjet printers, ink reservoirs may be disposable cartridges or external tanks used in continuous ink supply systems (CISS). These reservoirs must maintain stable pressure, minimize air ingress, and prevent contamination to ensure consistent droplet formation and color accuracy. In industrial or commercial printers, bulk ink tanks feed print heads via tubing and pumps, with monitoring systems to regulate supply and prevent leaks.

Key design considerations include capacity, ink viscosity and composition, evaporation, temperature sensitivity, venting, and compatibility with the feed mechanism. Maintenance focuses on sealing, using appropriate inks, avoiding cross-contamination, and preventing drying or clogging of the reservoir and feed system.
