Infrapunauunit is a Finnish term that may be used to refer to devices and components that operate with infrared radiation. The expression is not universally standardized in Finnish technical literature, and in many contexts speakers use infrapunalaite or infrapunasensor, but infrapunauunit can appear as a plural form describing infrared-emitting or detecting equipment considered as a set of units. The term emphasizes functional grouping rather than a single technology category.

Infrared spans wavelengths roughly 0.75 micrometres to the far infrared, with common subregions such as near-, short-, mid- and long-wave infrared. Infrared devices include emitters (IR LEDs, laser diodes, warm sources), detectors (photodiodes, photoconductors, bolometers, microbolometers) and complete imaging systems (thermal cameras, spectrometers).

Applications include thermal imaging for surveillance, search and rescue, firefighting; industrial inspection; process heating; night-vision; environmental monitoring; medicine and research. Some detectors require cooling (like InSb, HgCdTe), while many uncooled microbolometer devices are common in consumer cameras.

Safety and standards: infrared radiation requires caution for eye and skin exposure, particularly at higher powers; relevant standards include IEC 60825 for laser products and IEC 62471 for photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems. Historical note: infrared thermography and imaging developed considerably after mid-20th century, building on earlier thermometry and spectroscopy work.
