Inferensioon is a term used in logic and epistemology to describe the process of drawing conclusions from premises. It is a fundamental aspect of reasoning, where a new statement, known as an inference or conclusion, is derived from existing statements, called premises. The validity of an inference depends on the logical structure of the argument, not necessarily on the truth of the premises themselves. If the premises are true and the argument form is valid, then the conclusion must also be true.

There are two primary types of inference: deductive and inductive. Deductive inference moves from general principles to specific conclusions. For example, if all men are mortal, and Socrates is a man, then it logically follows that Socrates is mortal. Inductive inference, on the other hand, moves from specific observations to broader generalizations. For instance, observing that every swan seen so far is white might lead to the inductive conclusion that all swans are white, though this conclusion is probabilistic and can be disproven by a single observation of a non-white swan.

Abductive inference is another form, often described as inference to the best explanation. It involves forming a hypothesis that best explains a given set of observations. For example, if you wake up and find the ground is wet, you might abduce that it rained during the night. The process of inference is crucial for acquiring knowledge, solving problems, and making decisions in various fields, including science, mathematics, and everyday life.
