Inertiaaliviitekehyksiä, or inertial frames of reference, are fundamental concepts in classical mechanics and relativity. An inertial frame of reference is defined as a coordinate system where Newton's first law of motion, the law of inertia, holds true. This means that an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will continue in motion with constant velocity (constant speed and direction), unless acted upon by a net external force.

In simpler terms, in an inertial frame, there are no fictitious forces acting on objects. Fictitious forces, such as the centrifugal force or Coriolis force, appear in non-inertial frames of reference due to the acceleration of the frame itself. For example, if you are on a merry-go-round, you feel an outward force that is not due to any real interaction. This is because the merry-go-round is a rotating, non-inertial frame.

In classical Newtonian mechanics, any frame of reference that is moving with constant velocity relative to an absolute, unmoving frame (which is theoretical) is considered an inertial frame. All inertial frames are in uniform motion relative to each other. This principle is known as Galilean relativity.

In Einstein's theory of special relativity, the concept of inertial frames is also central. However, special relativity postulates that the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames of reference. There is no preferred inertial frame; all such frames are equivalent for describing physical phenomena. The speed of light in a vacuum is also constant in all inertial frames, regardless of the motion of the light source or the observer.

The identification and understanding of inertial frames are crucial for accurately describing motion and applying the laws of physics. While a perfectly inertial frame is an idealization, it provides a powerful framework for understanding mechanics and the universe.
