indbetaler

Indbetaler is a Danish term used in finance, pensions and insurance to denote the person or entity that makes payments into a fund, policy or account. The word derives from ind (“into”) and betale (“to pay”). In everyday usage, indbetaler refers to the party that contributes a regular amount, for example by payroll deduction to a pension plan or by premium payments for an insurance policy. The counterpart in most contracts is the udbetaler or payer of benefits, i.e., the person or institution that disburses benefits.

In occupational pension schemes in Denmark, both employees and employers can be indbetalere to the pension fund, and contributions are recorded as indbetalinger crediting the member’s account. The term can also be applied to life, health or accident insurance, where the policyholder or arrangement identifies the person or organisation responsible for premium payments.

Not all schemes assign the same role: the indbetaler may be the policyholder (the person who holds the contract) or a third party acting on their behalf (for example an employer paying premiums for an employee). In public systems, the government or a public authority may act as indbetaler by collecting and forwarding contributions.

Legal and accounting contexts often require precise identification of the indbetaler for tax treatment, fund accounting, and benefit eligibility. The corresponding term for the recipient of payments or benefits is typically udbetaler or the policyholder/beneficiary, depending on the structure of the contract.
